"Emily Jacir: Europa" coincides with the artist’s first major institutional survey exhibition in the UK and Ireland.

The focus of Jacir’s exhibition and catalogue are works that examine her manifold relationship to Europe – Italy and the Mediterranean in particular. As poetic as it is political and biographical, her artistic practice investigates various histories of colonisation, exchange, transformation, resistance, movement and migration. Jacir has built a complex and compelling oeuvre through a diverse range of media and methodologies that include unearthing historic material, performative gestures and in-depth research. The projects in Jacir’s Europa also explore etymology and translation, the tension between figuration and abstraction and the instrumentalisation of both human and financial capital.

This fully illustrated catalogue features original essays by Jean Fisher, Lorenzo Fusi, Omar Kholeif, Graziella Parati and Nikos Papastergiadis, as well as an excerpt from Franco Cassanno chosen by the artist.
