"I get to inspire other women that there’s a place for us in this industry"
Who are you?
My name is Zhamak, and I’m a Toronto based photographer. I’m a girl. This industry is sometimes overwhelming to a female, but I like the challenge. I love photos and cute boys/girls to photograph.
What made you pick up a camera for the first time?
I have lots of beautiful friends so it only made sense that I’d pick up a camera to photograph them.
Why do you photograph?
When someone views your work, what do you want them to feel?
I want them to feel sad mostly, but they can feel whatever they want to feel.
Are there any subjects you feel most comfortable shooting?
I love people, and doing portraits.
What has been the most informative experience you’ve had as a photographer thus far?
I’ve learned a lot from this production agency I work with in Toronto: Kid Studio. They’ve taught me how to be a better creative.
What are you able to convey via film that you can’t digitally?
I only shoot in film. I just like film and it’s as simple as that to be honest.
Are you more comfortable behind or in front of the lens?
Definitely behind the camera. Although, there’s been some selfies surfacing these days.
Where do you draw the most inspiration from?
I find inspiration everywhere: my day to day life, and my interactions with people.
What is it about photography that allows you to express yourself better than other art forms?
I like the fact that I can make someone feel a certain emotion with just a photo they look at for a split second.
What are your thoughts on social media and on technology constant evolution?
Social media is boring, and it feeds everyone's lies. I like reading books and lurking CNN or BBC.
Why has it been important for you, as a woman, to be a photographer?
I’ve been able to deliver the same work as a male photographer, and that’s important to me. I get to inspire other women that there’s a place for us in this industry. Of course there are the shitty people that are involved, and treat you lesser than a man, but who cares they can be ignorant and stupid.
