Special Edition: Justine Kurland

For one week only, purchase a limited edition artist print by Justine Kurland from her celebrated series Girls Pictures.

“From 1997 through 2002 I staged photographs of teenage girls in the American wilderness for my series Girl Pictures. Photography offered a way to imagine a coming world where a female experience would be foregrounded and affirmed, where our solidarity made us stronger. I borrowed the trope of the teenage runaway as an establish device, to free the girls from a prescribed domestic life and create a situation where they might forge their own community. The girls performed scenes of caretaking that became actual caretaking; feeding each other, brushing each other’s hair, walking arm in arm. I intended for them to playact a state of communal bliss. As it turned out, the girls were enthralled just by being together and making pictures. They jumped and half-skipped around each other each time we descended from the car and trekked into spaces of make-believe.” – Justine Kurland

A portion of this print sale's proceeds will benefit Speciwomen, our mission and endeavors.

Speciwomen Issue 4: I Belong To This

This issue is a catalogue of the show I Belong To This curated by Justine Kurland at Huxley–Parlour in London in Fall 2021.

I belong to this brings seventeen artists together around themes of self and family, private rites and communal ritual, along a continuum of becoming. The title of the show is from Ariana Reines’s poem “Save the World”, and can be read as a declaration of identification, a promise of solidarity, or a blurring of self into multitudes. These artists mark an intractable this. The camera points, more like an ear than an index finger, in the direction of what is felt rather than seen and to those invisible threads that hold us together.” — Justine Kurland
